Thread the boards 1 – round up

Starting what we hope to be a weekly feature, here’s some of what’s going on on the site at the moment.

Summary: Michael Jackson | Q&A on Iran | Boardeaux soccer team | Cycling | Parenting Leaving Cert | Contact emails

# After Hours – the Michael Jackson thread.

He is a legend and that’s something that will never been taken away from him despite all the stuff reported in the media. Sad time for all his fanatical fans. I love the young Michael Jackson… brilliant entertainer!

At time of writing this blog post  there’s 924 replies and over 40,500 views on the Michael Jackson thread. A lot of different thoughts, impressions and emotions being expressed. like the above from Munster_Gal and the below from Basquille:

I will admit I’m not a fan of Michael Jackson.. he made some great music but all and all, I just was never a fan.

However.. despite all the criticism against him and his personal life, legal issues (etc), it’s very sad to see the man pass away at 50.

Think of all he has went through in the last 10 – 15 years. I can’t imagine he enjoyed his life at all throughout this and although we all have had a laugh at his expense.. but even in his rumoured death, can people actually simply let the jokes lie for a short time. They’re not clever and most of them are 5 years old.

I know I’m saying this in After Hours and jokes are bound to be made.. but to be honest, I’m actually very sad to see him pass away (that’s if it is true) after the absolutely horrible time he’s went through both by the public and the media.

# Politics – http://politics.boards.ie:

RTE Prime Time logo

Right off the bat, we have Mark Little of RTE’s Prime Time contributing to a Q&A thread over on the Politics forum about Iran on the day that Prime Time had a show about the topic.

We’re hoping to do more of this in the future and where possible will bring you advance notice on the blog.

# Soccer – http://soccer.boards.ie

boardeaux - the Boards.ie soccer team

Back Row (L-R) : Peader, Lepo, Mick, Cathal, Mark, Gav, Clayton, Simon, Daryll, Larry, Karl, Dave.
Front Row (L-R) : Eddie, Dan (c), Ciaran, Ed, Art, Mick, Peter, Martin

Boardeaux, the Boards soccer team is going from strength to strength. A word from Des, team manager and one of the Boards Team moderators:

Boardeaux kicked off their sixth season in mid-April, on the back of a very good second place finish in the Winter 08/09 Season, for which the lads collected their first medals in the Blue of Boardeaux.

Having played eleven games so far in the Summer ’09 Season they have racked up an impressive nine wins, one draw and only one loss and currently sit on 28 points at the top of the table, three points clear of their nearest rivals, with seven games left.

In those eleven games they have only conceded eight goals, which in the quite fast moving Astro game is very impressive, and means they have the best defence in the league.

In their last game they had a very good 5-1 win with the goals coming from Ciaran, Art, Gav, Mick and Dave.

Earlier in the season the team featured in the RTE Television Program Capital D where I was interviewed and some footage from a match was shown.

You can catch the team playing every Tuesday evening at Wesley College on the Ballinteer Road in South Dublin. This week’s game kicks off at 20.15 and you can find the full fixture/results list here.

So get out to support the lads if you can, as their season continues and they strive to better last season’s silver medals. All support welcome and appreciated.

# The Cycling Forum – http://cycling.boards.ie

Over on the cycling forum – http://cycling.boards.ie – there’s also been some good news. Scott Reynolds talks about winning his first league race (in a Boards.ie shirt no less, nice one centurion :) ) over on the cycling forum. A funny round up of his race can be found in his Swords League Race – 10/06/2009 thread.

They’ve also got their own fancy forum banner – very swish!

# Leaving Cert – http://leavingcert.boards.ie

Then there was the Leaving Cert Exam leak earlier this month. Oh dear. A dozy examiner handed out the wrong paper and next thing you know, the information is all over the internet and SMS, resulting in a thread with over 3,400 replies and 129,900 views.

According to The Irish Times, if only we had shut up and pretended like it didn’t happen then everything would have been juuuuust fine. You’d think they would understand the concept of “shooting the messenger”…
